Let’s Bing it?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Get ready for a Microsoft and Yahoo search engine partnership, as they are in talks of a new deal. The deal states that Microsoft will pay Yahoo several billions of dollars upfront to take over its search advertising business and guarantee certain payments back to Yahoo.

Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing.com has reportedly received good ratings. If the deal comes through, both Yahoo and Microsoft can gain. In addition, we can also get ready for some new innovative technology, which is caused by the intense competition.

Now, what does this mean for Google, currently the world’s largest search engine?

Google states that their primary competitors are Microsoft and Yahoo. They believe Microsoft will increasingly use its financial and engineering resources to compete, especially since Microsoft has more employees and cash resources. In addition, both Microsoft and Yahoo have longer operating histories and more established relationships with customers. Any teamwork between Microsoft and Yahoo will could lead to a decline in Google’s user traffic or the size of their network, thereby bringing a decline in their revenues.

Know What’s in YOUR Pizza? (Continued)

If you read my post on 4/15/09, you might be better informed for this post, regarding the prank that 2 employees from Domino’s had played. I mentioned before that I did not see the actual video because the original videos uploaded on YouTube, Twitter, and other networks had been removed. But due to the strength of the social media, individuals have made copies of the original video and posted them yet again for us to view.

So, I was reading my morning news today when I came across this article about how Domino’s still has this crisis on its hands because obviously this isn’t something we can easily forget, especially their regular customers. The company has created its own Twitter account and posted videos, apologizing and trying to reassure the consumers that the food was never delivered..

Anyway, I happened to come across a copy of the video about the prank the two employees pulled. But, I couldn’t help but think that they could have easily lied and said that the food was never delivered because it just looks too real to me…To go through preparing all those sandwiches and throw it all away for a video? Makes me wonder why people pay employees to have such time on their hands that they have time to actually do this. The woman, Kristy Hammonds Thompson even said that she was a lazy worker. I think there is a good chance that the food was actually delivered and I know that this same doubt is in other people’s heads.

Know What’s in YOUR Pizza?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Two workers from Domino’s Pizza, Kristy Hammonds Thompson and Michael Setzer, were fired after they had posted a video on YouTube, which was viewed over a million times. The video and discussions regarding it were quickly spread throughout the social media, spreading to the front page of Google search and throughout Twitter. Now what exactly was the chaos in this video? Apparently, these two employers were playing around with the food–Setzer who had put cheese up his nose before putting it on a sandwich, along with nasal mucus, topping it off with a sneeze! Talk about violating health-code standards…

But, according to Domino’s, the employees stated that they never delivered the tainted food. Regardless, after years of trying to build up good image and customer service, in just a couple days, is Domino’s reputation ruined because of this silly prank? The company is now preparing for a civil lawsuit. Even their loyal customers of over 10 years are now doubting their relationship with Domino’s.

Are you thinking, “teenagers these days?” Well if you are, you should realize that the woman, Thompson, who was filming the video is 31 years old and Setzer who was performing these unethical deeds is 32 years old. Ironically, Thompson also has a criminal history including being registered as a sex offender and convictions for possession of stolen property.

The videos are now removed and the two employees have been fired and are facing charges. But this brings me to wonder–where exactly were the supervisors or the managers at Domino’s? Was there no one in authority to prohibit this action from happening? Although I did not view this video, I saw that it was over two minutes. I understand that authority cannot be there every minute to monitor the employees’ actions but it does raise up controversial questions. On another note, it is sad to say that you should never offend employees because you never know what they can do with your food.

Yahoo and Microsoft again??

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Recap of last year:
Early last year,
Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo for about $44.6 billion. However, former CEO of Yahoo, Jerry Yang, refused to sell the company that he had co-founded. Many outraged shareholders have even named him as “Idiot of the Year.” Although Yahoo’s shares have declined because of the failed acquisition, maybe we should see Yang’s perspective. If you had founded a company, and it was your very own company, would you be willing to sell it or do you think you still have a good chance to help it prosper, especially considering that it is Yahoo? Let’s not forget how strong Yahoo had been and how it had dominated the market before Google came. Many would still say yes that the acquisition should have taken place because, what Yang had done, many had considered rather selfish. It seemed like he did not think about his shareholders, as the (probable) best option would have been to sell Yahoo.

This year:
Since Microsoft’s offer, Yahoo’s stock has shed
more than half of its value since this time last year, when Microsoft was offering to buy the company for $31 a share. Yahoo is currently trading at around $13 per share.

Now, sources (WSJ) have revealed that Yahoo is in a informal discussion with Microsoft oabout a possible partnership to sell online advertising, a market which Google obviously has dominated. Carol Bartz is now the CEO of Yahoo, taking over Yang’s position since he had stepped down last year. If Microsoft and Yahoo do agree to work together, can they even come close as to challenge Google? Should Google feel afraid or threatened if this partnership succeeds?

Google and Twitter

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Will Google offer Twitter a desirable amount for an acquisition? If this processes, this would be second sale for Twitter’s founders! This blogger that we’re using right now was sold to Google just 5 years ago by Evan Williams and Biz Stone (founders of Twitter).

Also, let’s not forget that a few months ago, Twitter had turned down an offer to be bought by Facebook. Enough said, Twitter has definitely gone up in value!
