Know What’s in YOUR Pizza? (Continued)

April 18th, 2009

If you read my post on 4/15/09, you might be better informed for this post, regarding the prank that 2 employees from Domino’s had played. I mentioned before that I did not see the actual video because the original videos uploaded on YouTube, Twitter, and other networks had been removed. But due to the strength of the social media, individuals have made copies of the original video and posted them yet again for us to view.

So, I was reading my morning news today when I came across this article about how Domino’s still has this crisis on its hands because obviously this isn’t something we can easily forget, especially their regular customers. The company has created its own Twitter account and posted videos, apologizing and trying to reassure the consumers that the food was never delivered..

Anyway, I happened to come across a copy of the video about the prank the two employees pulled. But, I couldn’t help but think that they could have easily lied and said that the food was never delivered because it just looks too real to me…To go through preparing all those sandwiches and throw it all away for a video? Makes me wonder why people pay employees to have such time on their hands that they have time to actually do this. The woman, Kristy Hammonds Thompson even said that she was a lazy worker. I think there is a good chance that the food was actually delivered and I know that this same doubt is in other people’s heads.

Approaching Deadline for G.M.

Free Stock Market Ebook
April 17th, 2009

Fritz Henderson, the chief executive officer (CEO) of General Motors (NYSE:GM) said that “it is still feasible” for GM to meet the Obama administration’s June 1st deadline to come up with a new, acceptable plan and an effective form of management. Regardless, GM’s executives are still preparing to seek court protection if they are to file for bankruptcy, which Henderson considers as a “two-track plan.

“It’s pretty simple,” Henderson said. “If we can’t accomplish it outside a bankruptcy, we would do it inside a bankruptcy.”

GM’s shares have dropped 5% so far from today’s open to $1.84. More info on GM’s bankruptcy can be found in my previous blog on April 23, 2009.

And what about Chrysler??

Chrysler could still be at a great risk if GM fails. However, Obama’s administration requires Chrysler to join an alliance with the Italian carmaker Fiat, which would then lead to management changes, for the better of course. This alliance would allow Chrysler to receive more government financing and decrease their chances of filing for bankruptcy. Once the alliance is completed, new management will take in effect as the U.S. government and Fiat will appoint a board of directors that are independent of the two companies. This means that the majority of the directors will not be employees of neither Fiat or Chrysler and then, the board will decide who to appoint as the new chairman and CEO in each other’s consent. Seems like some pretty good news right? Well..if it works out, that is, and considering that the new management will be effective.

Any news from Ford?

Good news! Standard & Poor’s raised its ratings for Ford Motors (NYSE:F) Reason why? Ford recently cut its debt by nearly $10 billion! But, keep in mind that there are still warnings that Ford might still be at risk for running short on cash.

Let’s hope that GM arrives soon with some good news!

April 15th, 2009

Two workers from Domino’s Pizza, Kristy Hammonds Thompson and Michael Setzer, were fired after they had posted a video on YouTube, which was viewed over a million times. The video and discussions regarding it were quickly spread throughout the social media, spreading to the front page of Google search and throughout Twitter. Now what exactly was the chaos in this video? Apparently, these two employers were playing around with the food–Setzer who had put cheese up his nose before putting it on a sandwich, along with nasal mucus, topping it off with a sneeze! Talk about violating health-code standards…

But, according to Domino’s, the employees stated that they never delivered the tainted food. Regardless, after years of trying to build up good image and customer service, in just a couple days, is Domino’s reputation ruined because of this silly prank? The company is now preparing for a civil lawsuit. Even their loyal customers of over 10 years are now doubting their relationship with Domino’s.

Are you thinking, “teenagers these days?” Well if you are, you should realize that the woman, Thompson, who was filming the video is 31 years old and Setzer who was performing these unethical deeds is 32 years old. Ironically, Thompson also has a criminal history including being registered as a sex offender and convictions for possession of stolen property.

The videos are now removed and the two employees have been fired and are facing charges. But this brings me to wonder–where exactly were the supervisors or the managers at Domino’s? Was there no one in authority to prohibit this action from happening? Although I did not view this video, I saw that it was over two minutes. I understand that authority cannot be there every minute to monitor the employees’ actions but it does raise up controversial questions. On another note, it is sad to say that you should never offend employees because you never know what they can do with your food.

FACEBOOK USERS

April 14th, 2009

Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook, is a genius, and a very young one too. At only age 24, in 2008, Forbes ranked Zuckerberg as the 321st richest person in the United States. He is the youngest person to ever appear on the Forbes 400! Congratulations!

Facebook has recently surpassed 200 million users! Unbelievable amount. MySpace used to be the number one social networking website but Facebook has long passed them.

So how is Facebook affecting us? Do you own a Facebook? Do you have children who own a Facebook, or do you know anyone who does?

Research has shown that Facebook users have lower overall grades than non-users. You might be thinking that might have been obvious but, however, that does not automatically mean that using Facebook leads to less studying and worse grades. The grades association could have been caused by a third variable unrelated to Facebook. In other words, correlation does not mean causation. But this research has definitely raised more questions about how students choose to spend their time on activities outside class, such as Facebook.

The study found that Facebook user GPAs (grade point average) were in the 3.0 – 3.5 range on average compared to the 3.5 – 4.0 for non-users. The study also included that Facebook users studied anywhere from 1-5 hours per week, compared to non-users who studied 11-15 or more hours! That’s a pretty big difference! 3.0 and 4.0 are on opposite sides of the B/A spectrum, which could totally account for whether you get hired to that prestigious firm or not. Especially with this recession, everything matters. There was also a significant increase in how much more time the nonusers spent studying. 11-15 hours show devotion and leads to good future work habits (such as less procrastination).

I, myself, am a Facebook user and I find myself on Facebook when I should be doing other things (more productive). However, I do not play any games or really use any of their applications (more ways to distract yourself). It’s actually pretty sad that I have to find a lot of my information posted on Facebook, such as events. People have become so accustomed to Facebook that they start planning birthday parties or other events on Facebook and simply just sending out invitations to friends, instead of calling each of them up and notifying them all.

But, in addition, I have seen students’s statuses on Facebook saying, “I should be studying…but I’m on Facebook” or somewhere between those lines. There are even groups with that name. Facebook is a distraction. Each 5 minutes you might spend viewing a friend’s album adds up to that hour that you could use to do something else.

Challenge? If you’re a Facebook user or know anyone who owns a Facebook, challenge them to deactivate their Facebook. See how long they can last without using it. Believe it or not, Facebook has become an addiction.

Last Bits of GM

Click Here For The Wall Street Journal

April 13th, 2009

General Motors Corps. (NYSE:GM) , currently at $1.71 has fallen since its closing on Friday at $2.04. That’s already down 16%! What’s the reason? Yesterday, the Times reported that the U.S. Treasury has directed GM to prepare to file for bankruptcy by June 1. GM has accepted $13.4 billion in federal bailout funds and has asked for at least $16 billion more. Last month, President Obama had forced former CEO Rick Wagoner to resign, and then later setting a deadline for the company with an acceptable new plan (more info discussed in my previous blog on Tuesday, April 7, 2009)

A possible plan, however, might be to split GM into a “new” company made up of their most successful units, and an “old” one of its less-profitable units. In addition, any attempt at a “quick” bankruptcy for GM could face legal challenges from bondholders of GM, as the bondholders are now preparing a case against the bankruptcy plan. Obviously, the bondholders are worried that the process would lead them to end up losing hefty losses on their investments. Common stockholders, in this case, would lose almost all of their investments, if not everything. Probably not a great idea to invest in GM now but might be a good idea to sell your shares, should you own any. Better to get $1.72 per share than nothing at all.

The issue here now is that if GM files for bankruptcy, this has a good chance of causing Chrysler LLC to break down and accompany GM in bankruptcy.

Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) is the only one of the Detroit Big Three automakers that did not take federal funds and is doing the best out of the three.

Yahoo and Microsoft again??

Open an Account at OptionsHouse Today!

April 10th, 2009

Recap of last year:
Early last year,
Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo for about $44.6 billion. However, former CEO of Yahoo, Jerry Yang, refused to sell the company that he had co-founded. Many outraged shareholders have even named him as “Idiot of the Year.” Although Yahoo’s shares have declined because of the failed acquisition, maybe we should see Yang’s perspective. If you had founded a company, and it was your very own company, would you be willing to sell it or do you think you still have a good chance to help it prosper, especially considering that it is Yahoo? Let’s not forget how strong Yahoo had been and how it had dominated the market before Google came. Many would still say yes that the acquisition should have taken place because, what Yang had done, many had considered rather selfish. It seemed like he did not think about his shareholders, as the (probable) best option would have been to sell Yahoo.

This year:
Since Microsoft’s offer, Yahoo’s stock has shed
more than half of its value since this time last year, when Microsoft was offering to buy the company for $31 a share. Yahoo is currently trading at around $13 per share.

Now, sources (WSJ) have revealed that Yahoo is in a informal discussion with Microsoft oabout a possible partnership to sell online advertising, a market which Google obviously has dominated. Carol Bartz is now the CEO of Yahoo, taking over Yang’s position since he had stepped down last year. If Microsoft and Yahoo do agree to work together, can they even come close as to challenge Google? Should Google feel afraid or threatened if this partnership succeeds?
